about
Song started as comment around the observation of lack of after care for ex-military experiencing homelessness, mental health and falling into alcohol or substance misuse problems and some ending up in the criminal justice system. The cenotaph was to provide a focal point through which to express this. As the song developed it was impossible to ignore the subculture that takes place around the cenotaph gangs, drugs and the sex industry all operating and driven by the wider social values of consumerism and resultant tendency to destroy the environment in the pursuit of consumption. It is up to the new generation to decide their future. With the youth being introduced to the transmission of the values of the old system will they ever truly have a chance.
lyrics
Cenotaph Way
Playing with guns down by the cenotaph where the dustbins line the street.
Theres a kitchen open if your sleeping rough & you can find some food to eat.
President smiles dbtc and the nation shares the grief
Subsidies all the chemical war and he lays a remembrance wreath
Introduce the children to the broken futue dumped on cenotaph way.
Down on Cenotaph way. X 2
Sex for sale dbtc as the Christmas crowds rush by.
& for the unemployed in a run down town I heard they hold a recruitment drive.
I bow my head for a minute silence as the bugler sounds the call.
They got a fairground ride dbtc and a Banksy on the wall.
Introduce the children to the broken future dumped on cenotaph way
Cenotaph way.
Guitar solo.
Selling Crack cocaine down by the cenotaph it’s a different kind of war.
I used to serve my country now I’m on my way to score
Same parade pass down by the cenotaph and veterans show their age
We got a highway fit for heroes post it on my facebook page
Introduce the children to the broken future down on cenotaph way
Cenotaph way
repeat
Flagpole stand the test of time
Concrete man with a frozen smile
It says theres no surrender and theres no defeat
And you trapped in a past you condemned to repeat
Take a little ride on cenotaph way x 3
